IGNITE SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS
At Brave Words, we believe in the power of theatre to ignite young imaginations.
Our workshops are led by an historical character in full costume and use an exciting range of props, costumes and real historical artefacts to enable children to make a solid connection with history. We believe that high level work is created when children feel inspired, excited and enthralled by a topic, so we bring history to life and encourage children to live different time periods experientially, to ask questions and engage with the subject matter.
KEY STAGE 1
Professor Brink turns your pupils into palaeontologists as they unearth real brachiopods, ammonites and dinosaur bones! Create an interactive timeline of the dinosaur eras, explore evolution, and act out the stories of the dinosaurs – from the humble Compsognathus to the great plodding Brachiosaurus, and everyone’s favourite mega-predator: the T-Rex!
Frances-de-Winter, lady-in-waiting to Elizabeth Tudor, explores and explains what it means to be a queen, how to behave around one – and how to enact your very own class 'Trooping of the Colours'!
Queens Elizabeth Tudor, Victoria Saxe-Coburg and Elizabeth Windsor all reigned for far longer than the men around them through times of great change. Create an interactive timeline of the major events in their lives, transform into key figures, explore artefacts from each Queen’s reign and make your own flags!
Mrs Mistleton the Victorian teacher and housekeeper will show you the ropes of working in a Victorian manor house, from grooming the horses in the stables to using a mangle to dry clothing in the washroom.
She’ll introduce you to the clothing and a set of authentic Victorian toys for the rich children living in the manor, as well as some fantastic Victorian technology. Just don’t shuffle or chatter too much, or you might be unlucky enough to experience the darker side of Victorian education!
KEY STAGE 2
Grett the Iron Age woman is set on causing mischief in your school! Pupils will excavate real artefacts themselves before imagining their life in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age - and curating a museum with their findings.
Led by the imperious Priestess of Amon-Ra, the class will discover myths and legends from cities and villages along the Nile and create dramatic retellings of these ancient stories. They will then work together to create their very own Egyptian myth and unearth real Egyptian treasures.
Led by Senecia, the wife of a Roman Governor, children will be conscripted to don full lorica segmentata armour and become Romano-British citizens themselves, engaging with everyday tasks from three distinct levels of society, from jewellery and mosaic making to spinning and weaving.
